Tenants Have New Rights!

NYS passed Good Cause Eviction Protections against rent hikes and unfair evictions in April 2024. If you are eligible for Good Cause, you now have a right to remain in your home as long as you pay rent and follow your lease.

STATEMENT: Housing Justice for All Slams Changes to IAIs

“Individual Apartment Improvements are eviction bonuses that put a target on the backs of tenants”

ALBANY, NY – In response to comments from Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins indicating that changes to Individual Apartment Improvements will be in the budget deal, Housing Justice for All, a statewide coalition of more than 80 organizations that represents tenants and homeless New Yorkers, released the following statement from Cea Weaver, Coalition Director

“Individual Apartment Improvements are eviction bonuses that put a target on the backs of tenants. Bringing back eviction bonuses that primarily push elderly tenants out of their homes is the last thing we should be doing in a housing crisis. The IAI system was rife with fraud and abuse – reopening that door is a billion-dollar giveaway to REBNY and a slap in the face to the organized tenant movement. We cannot and will not stand by while the Governor and legislative leadership attempt to trade one set of tenants’ rights for another. A budget that waters down Good Cause and brings back IAIs is a disaster and an embarrassment.”
