The Our Homes Our Power Campaign
Fighting for housing as a human right
Housing is a basic human right, but too many New Yorkers live without safe and decent homes. Thanks to a system that favors the real estate lobby and big corporate landlords over tenants and homeless New Yorkers, we are facing a historic housing crisis.
But tenants and homeless New Yorkers aren’t going to wait for the real estate industry to solve the crisis. We’ve come together to fight for solutions that get us out of this crisis right now, while sowing the seeds for a new housing system that finally puts people over profits.
The Problem:
New Yorkers are facing a housing crisis of historic proportions. Rents, evictions, and homelessness are through the roof.
Our Solutions:
Albany must shift the balance of power to tenants and homeless New Yorkers. In 2023, we’re fighting for a big, bold housing package that will help all New Yorkers pay the rent, fight for safe and decent living conditions, and have access to a permanent, stable home.
Good Cause
Grants every tenant in New York State protections against unjust evictions and unreasonable rent increases.
Housing Access Voucher Program
Sets up a statewide rental subsidy program for low-income New Yorkers who are homeless, facing eviction, or at risk of losing their housing because of domestic violence or hazardous living conditions.
Tenant Opportunity to Purchase Act
Gives tenants the right to collectively decide the future of their building when it’s up for sale and a tool to more effectively fight for safer and better living conditions.
Rent Stabilization Reforms
Would make the process for determining rental rates for rent-stabilized apartments more fair and democratic and also make it easier for upstate cities to opt into rent stabilization.
Social Housing
Creates a pathway to build publicly-backed housing that is insulated from market forces and lets residents exert democratic control over their homes.
