“There are 2.5 million rent stabilized tenants in New York. If candidates want our votes, they must commit to a rent freeze.”
NEW YORK – Today, Assemblymember Zohran Mamdani became the first mayoral candidate to commit to freezing the rent for all rent stabilized tenants. The Mayor-controlled Rent Guidelines Board decides how much rent goes up for 2.5 million rent stabilized tenants each year – and under Mayor Eric Adams, rent stabilized tenants saw massive rent increases for every year of his term.
The statement below can be attributed to Housing Justice for All Coalition Director Cea Weaver:
“There are 2.5 million rent stabilized tenants in New York. If candidates want our votes, they must commit to a rent freeze.
“Tenants are the backbone of New York City, keeping New York running as nurses, teachers, bus drivers, and more. But high rents are driving us out of the city we love. Instead of keeping us in our homes, Eric Adams works for real estate, hiking up our rents year after year just to fatten the wallets of his landlord donors.
“In New York City, tenants are the majority – and we’ll be voting for a mayor who will fight for us to stay in the city we built.”
